After Two Decades, PIA Flies Back Into Profit – Rs 5.01 EPS Reported

Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) is on track to post its first annual profit since 2003, signaling a significant turnaround for the national carrier. According to a report by Bloomberg, the airline recorded earnings of Rs 5.01 per share for the year ending December 2024, a remarkable achievement after over two decades of financial turmoil.

This positive development comes as the airline undergoes major reforms in preparation for privatization. Over the years, PIA has faced persistent losses, burdened by inefficient operations, rising debts, and management challenges. However, a strategic shift in recent years has led to improved financial health.

Key reforms include downsizing the workforce, shutting down unprofitable domestic and international routes, and enhancing fleet utilization. These steps have allowed the airline to operate more efficiently and cut unnecessary costs. In addition, a large-scale restructuring effort helped the airline eliminate billions of rupees in debt from its balance sheets, making it more attractive to potential investors.

Analysts suggest that the return to profitability could strengthen the government’s case for privatization, which is a key part of Pakistan’s broader economic reform agenda. The move is expected to bring in private sector efficiency and help improve service quality while reducing the financial burden on the state.

PIA’s recovery is being viewed as a positive sign for the aviation industry in Pakistan, and it could pave the way for further investments and growth in the sector.
