The Indus Game-Changer

Pakistan is undertaking a groundbreaking infrastructure project — the construction of South Asia’s longest river bridge, the Ghotki-Kandhkot Bridge. Spanning an impressive 12.5 kilometers over the Indus River, the bridge is expected to be completed by 2028 at an estimated cost of Rs30.5 billion.

This transformative project aims to drastically reduce travel time between Ghotki and Kandhkot from 2.5 hours to just 15 minutes, providing a much-needed relief for commuters and freight transporters. Currently, travelers rely on limited and time-consuming ferry services or take long detours to cross the river. Once completed, the bridge will offer a fast, safe, and direct route connecting three key provinces — Sindh, Punjab, and Balochistan.

The bridge is a key component of the Sindh government’s broader infrastructure development strategy, which includes Rs616 billion worth of mega projects under public-private partnerships (PPP). These initiatives are designed not only to improve connectivity but also to stimulate economic growth in underdeveloped regions. In particular, the Ghotki-Kandhkot Bridge is expected to uplift the local economy of Kandhkot by improving access to markets, reducing transportation costs, and attracting investment.

This ambitious infrastructure drive reflects a renewed focus on regional development and integration. By linking key trade routes and improving inter-provincial connectivity, the project will play a crucial role in enhancing Pakistan’s logistical and economic landscape.

With completion targeted for 2028, the Ghotki-Kandhkot Bridge stands as a symbol of progress, promising to bridge not just two banks of the Indus River, but the economic potential of an entire region.
